Since the launch of Premium Economy in 2012, Cathay Pacific has consistently impressed travellers with a product that has set the benchmark in its class. Many other airlines have looked to Cathay for inspiration when developing their own versions. True to its reputation for continuous improvement, Cathay unveiled the first of its new Premium Economy cabins just under a year ago on its retrofitted Boeing 777-300ERs.

This latest cabin is part of a wider investment in Cathay Pacific’s inflight experience, which also includes the brand-new Aria Suite in Business class (which you can read about here) and a refreshed Economy class. Premium Economy has been thoroughly reimagined to balance privacy, comfort, and modern design, drawing on more than a decade of passenger feedback since the airline pioneered the product on its long-haul routes.

Airlineratings was invited to experience the new Premium Economy first-hand, and it did not disappoint. The moment you sit down, the sense of privacy is striking, thanks to redesigned headrests.

Each seat offers a generous 40 inch seat pitch, 21 inch seat width and 8 inch seat recline

The seat itself feels spacious, with notable recline and legroom. New headrest wings add an extra layer of seclusion and cleverly house a personal reading light that follows you when you recline. Additional storage in the armrest and carefully considered design details contribute to a calmer, more organised space. Turn on the inflight entertainment system and the effect is complete: a 15.6-inch 4K widescreen monitor paired with Bluetooth audio streaming, a cabin dressed in soothing colours, a luxury pillow and blanket, and uncluttered surroundings that together create the impression of a retreat in the sky.

Thoughtful touches like a compartment in the armrest for your phone add to the spacious and organised feel of the space

Dining has also been elevated. Menus showcase Hong Kong’s culinary heritage, with freshly sourced ingredients prepared in both classic Cantonese and international styles. Plant-forward dishes are included, alongside creations developed in partnership with Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant Yat Tung Heen. Prosecco is available throughout the flight, a welcome touch that this reviewer is happy to applaud.

Each seat comes with a blanket, pillow, menu, bottle of water, headphones and amenity kit

Practical improvements further enhance the experience. Premium Economy now has its own dedicated lavatories on each side of the cabin, designed with touch-free features for better hygiene. Passengers can even check lavatory availability directly from their seatback screen, avoiding unnecessary waits. Environmentally friendly amenity kits are also provided, aligning with Cathay Pacific’s sustainability commitments.

Cathay Pacific’s all-new Premium Economy is a clear step up for travellers seeking more privacy and comfort than Economy without committing to Business class. It is more than just an upgrade: it represents a redefinition of what Premium Economy can and should be.
